Apparently this is an update to one of those Japanese hero shows along the lines of Ultraman: The Complete Series and Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot: The Complete Series. The story is told in two parts. The first is hilariously funny, with cheap looking effects and fun fight sequences. The main character is Daimon, a 22-year old who appears to be the only employee of the Special Police unit. He rides a motorcycle that transforms into a fighting robot. Oh yeah, the robot was created from the DNA of Daimon's dead brother. The plot of this part is pretty predictable, but I had fun watching it.
The second part takes place 25 years later. Daimon is now 47-years old, diabetic, penniless, and has a bad back. Although there are some early scenes here that are laugh out loud funny, the second part doesn't hold a lot of surprises either, but does have a lot of heart. It also has better effects than part 1, and the forced perspective shots of the Jumbo Mecha are pretty good for the most part. I especially liked the scene where the Jumbo Mecha is destroying Tokyo while talking to a friend on a cell phone.
The closing credits show some of the same scenes from the original TV series (which I don't believe is available in the US) and it's fun to watch and see how much better this movie actually does them.
If you're a fan of these types of shows, this one is a worthwhile addition to your collection. RECOMMENDED.

One of the funniest films I've seen in a long time. The humor is fresh, and played straight, but meant for the audience to laugh. It's like Power Rangers gone horribly wrong, but in a way that makes this insane adventure thoroughly enjoyable to watch. The movie is split into two parts, the first part takes place in the 60's-70's and pokes fun of the Japanese superhero and cop shows at the time, then comes the second part that takes place in the present where the hero and his friends are old and suffering from the consequences of their adventures. If you know even a little bit about Japanese culture you will find parts of this movie hilarious, and if you don't it's still a fun film to watch. This is the type of film you will watch and immediately tell your friends about, but the film has so many insane and funny parts that you will have to invite them over to see it for themselves. You will be treated to subtitles with quotes like "Women can't realize love until we ruin those around us." and a Godzilla-sized cute robot Japanese girl who stomps through Tokyo causing people's heads to explode by talking on her cell phone!
The movie feels long, and you may want to take a break between the first and second part, but you will not be disappointed. It keeps hitting you with unexpected weirdness or laugh out loud humor. Behind all the insanity is a film crew that knew exactly what they were making. It's well made with good acting and effects that are purposely bad, not bad by execution like a poor Hollywood movie. The film audio is in Japanese only, but that works fine because the subtitles only add to the humor.
I've seen other films by the makers of this movie, like Machine Girl and RoboGeisha. Those movies suffered from too much gore and plots that ran out of steam. This movie doesn't have those problems. It's weird, but it holds together, and the violence is basically what you'd see on Power Rangers. The closest movie I can compare this to is Army of Darkness, and that's a stretch, but the weird humor is similar. Buy the movie, expect insanity and good laughs, and it will more than deliver. This is one of the greatest movies of all time. It has everything; transforming robots, cyborg girls, outrageous special effects, action and comedy. Also a bonus 19 mins of short films. If you loved the Japenese robot tv shows (and even if you didn't) you'll love this. Buy it now! Zaborgar Go!
