The premise of this movie is strangely similar to a recent novel, ONLY WOMEN BLEED, by L.J. Rivard. Only Women Bleed The main character in the novel learns on her twenty-first birthday that she survived abortion as an infant. The novel's main character, Jessica, also was born in October! She goes on a quest to find out the truth about her beginnings, in particular, the woman who aborted her. The book is not preachy at all, like a lot of the criticisms of October Baby. It's a good read, written by a lawyer, and so I learned a little something about the state of abortion law in this country as a bonus.
Back to my reveiw October Baby: I don't want to discuss the plot or give you any spoilers as other reviewers of the book and movie, October Baby have already done that. I will just speak to the two common criticisms:
First, the premisea girl discovers she survived abortion as a newborn, is NOT far-fetched. The most famous survivor of abortion is a real live person named Gianna Jessen. Her case is well-documented. She is now a pro-life speaker. Google her name to learn more.
Second,it's too preachy Well, this opinion is probably well-founded in October Baby. Again, don't want to include any spoilers. But in my opinion, the movie is GOODthe plot is excellent and interesting, it is well-acted and I'd give it two thumbs up. It will strike some as preachy but certainly not as preachy as an After School Special!
I would urge anyonewhether pro-life or pro-choice, to recommend both October Baby and Only Women Bleed to young women you know and care about. Abortion is an awful experience for anyone. Even pro-choice women who've undergone abortions can be forever traumatized. But stories like these cause young women to think about the issues beforehandalways good!We watched this movie having no idea what was in store for us. The heroine of the story is a lovely young girl who seems to be burdened with a variety of afflictions which cause her occasional problems as she tries to live her life as a college student. A dramatic incident on stage during her performance in a play serves as the catalyst for a journey of discovery as she attempts to unravel her past which seems to be filled with dark secrets.
When she is invited to join some friends on a short vacation trip from school she decides to use that opportunity to see if she can solve the mystery of her past. Her vacation trip becomes for her a voyage of discovery as she uncovers the truth about her past and then must learn how to deal with the truth in a healing manner.
The movie has a powerful message; a message celebrating the sanctity of life and the power of forgiveness. This is a movie that will be very hard to watch for some and will be totally rejected by others. It is a movie of love, loyalty, understanding, and forgiveness; it is a movie which will stay in your memory for a long time.
I recommend this movie to all who respect the sanctity of life and to those seeking answers.I imagine this will be one of the movies very liberal people won't want you watching (a 1/10 review on imdb.com seemed to have proven that). But hey, since it's independent, it's not like it's a powerhouse film that should be taken seriously, right? What if it defies indie-film tradition and actually has a really good story? Or very quirky people? Or down-to-Earth humor? Or even deep, interconnecting storylines connected into one single story? Or multiple scenes that not only have shocking secrets revelealed, but also cry (did that maybe three, four, possibly five times) throughout? Before this, extremely few indie films have had such a great impact on me. Fewer still were Faith-based. So it's a good thing the Erwin brother took a chance on this movie.
Imagine you're an aspiring actress that's just statting a play when you go down, unscripted. Well, revelations are made where you find out what you thought your life was really wasn't. You get a desire to find out your past, and until a friend invites you on a road trip, you wouldn't know how to find your past. You get there alright, you find out alright, but with every step of the journey is either a new laugh, a new heartbreak, or a new discovery about yourself in a whole new light.
Cool people (including newcomer actress Rachel Hendrix) give each character depth (even when they're not given a proportionate amount of screen time) and a reason to be in the story (whether hopeful, tragic, snobby, helpful, etc.). To say this was just a movie would be a gross misunderstanding considering the direction it took in filmmaking. The only problem I have with it is where some questions about why some people are the way they are can only be found in the deleted scenes (where I both cried and laugh hard). Nonetheless, this is deeply provoking, deeply enlightening, and most definitely worth watching all over again.
Sidenote: when I watched the deleted scenes, some of them I wondered why they didn't include them in the film? They added extra depth to certain characters who, otherwise, had stagnant personalities without explanation, which was sad.

It is a keeper! This is a family movie without any profanities, nudity or vulgarity. However, the subject of the movie may not be appropriate for young children.I purchased this movie the day that it came out from Walmart. Neither Amazon, nor Best Buy had it on Blu ray or DVD and they still don't have it for sale (...as you can see above it says unavailable!). Amazon just lists several used DVD copies to buy from. No new copy. You can buy a brand new copy from Walmart. Forget Amazon as far as purchasing a decent movie. I don't want to draw any conclusions and I don't want to speculate on the motivations of why Amazon and/or Best Buy don't carry the movie. But make sure you pressure Amazon to get the Blu ray and DVD version at a good price.
The movie is about the emotional stress of a teenager who finds out that she was adopted. On top of everything else she finds out that she survived an abortion that destroyed her tween brother. Very difficult (emotionally) to watch some of the scenes. While the acting is not at the level of a five star movie, I gave five stars because of the courage of the director, the producers, and the actors to make such a movie in the current tense political situation where everybody talks about abortion as being an undeniable woman's right. This subject is very actual and controversial. What about the baby's rights? What about her brother's rights? This movie brings everything in perspective.
The ending may be predictable but it is a good and positive ending!!!
Make sure you watch the movie even after it is all over, when the titles are rolling. You will get several details in there from the director and one of the movie participants that you don't expect. Usually people don't get emotional after the movie ends when the titles are rolling. In this case somebody shares real life drama. Expect the unexpected and keep the Kleenex box handy!this movie is from the aborted babies point of view something pro-abortion activists will never do,my sister was a abortion nurse in the 80s and saw that she was killing babies plain and simple..this movie shows the horrors of abortion and the babies right at a chance at life..........................
