Godzilla vs. Biollante (2012)

Godzilla vs. BiollanteGreetings,

I am still giving this item 5 stars for the honesty and professionalism EBHE has had with the fan community. however there is a caution: from 10/18/12-

"We have to go to manufacture today, and we don't have Miramax/Toho's blessing to include Ed G's commentary yet. We have initiated Plan B, which is releasing the discs without the commentary. I don't have much more for details right now, but I can tell you that if you are dying to buy Godzilla vs Biollante with the Ed G commentary, DO NOT buy it on release day. We have the replication masters ready to manufacture with the commentary included, but we are not allowed to use them until we get approvals. My apologies for getting your hopes up. I kept forging ahead hoping that Toho would get their approval to us at the last minute, but it hasn't happened."

So while this will have other Toho approved extras, it will NOT have the english commentary on release day. If you are planning on purchasing this item soleley for this purpose, please refrain. Many fans appreciate that sicne this item is so inexpensive they will purchase one in each format (waiting on the commentary to get the other). Echo Bridge has assured the fan community that there will be a public announcement made once the commentary has been approved, and a clear indication on the packaging as well (not like the recent MB fiasco with Godzilla vs Megalon).

Godzilla 1985 started a revolution. Evil Godzilla returned! The way he was meant to be. In the next installment of the evil 'zilla series, it is a few hours after Godzilla's deadly attack on Japan. A team of scientists collects some Godzilla cells from a scale found in the rubble. A spy from a terrorist nation tries to steal it. A few confusing moments later, we are thrown 5 years into the future. A scientist who lost his daughter in a lab explosion is experimenting with genetic mutation. He blends the Godzilla cell with a rose-bush cell. The result: A mutated, radioactive plant growing at an alarming rate. Shortly thereafter, Godzilla awakens from the volcano we saw him fall into in Godzilla 1985. When he attacks Tokyo and destroys Biollante, we find that Biollante is not just a monster, but actually holds a closer relationship to the professor than he thinks. Later on toward the end, after Godzilla does his rampaging, Biollante returns, a terrifying sight to behold. Biollante is one of my favorite 'G' enemies, as it is terrifying to look at and is very large and intimidating. The movie tends to drag at times, but the fights are well worth it. And if you are a 'G' fan to begin with, you appreciate these movies no matter what. The soundtrack is also very good. Definitely worth buying for G fans!

I wish I would have reviewed Godzilla Returns way back when I recieved that one. Now I have a chance to talk about both, sort of.

This is a direct to Japan version of this movie, with no English track or titles. Fortunately there is an option for English subtitles. And for me, that's really enough. This is a well done movie and now that I look at it, one of the best from the Heisei Godzilla series. It has great elements of classic sci-fi as well as a very sincere feel, similar to the origional 1954 Gojira. The scientist father character is compelling with his duel wreckless and wise natures. He's a character who learns from his mistakes, and actually lives long enough to pass this wisdom to others. His is a great, tragic character arc. This is the first movie to use Godzilla's standard Heisei look, and I think it's pulled off quite well here. He's a slow, lumbering character, but the point is, it doesn't matter how slow he is or if you can spot him. Because you can't stop him! Te close ups of his face are fantastic. I really like the detail on the fleshy tongue. And Biolante is one of the great classic, tragic monsters. She's dangerious, deadly, devious, but has the trapped soul of a lovely girl.

As for the DVD itelf, it's pretty basic. There are vew special fetures or options, but as this is the only official DVD release for this film, that automatically makes it the best. The video quality is somewhat lacking too, but nothing you're not used to if you grew up watching these movies on TV as a kid. But I can see this being somewhat of a dissapointment for many, as there is no English dub. Again, that's fine by me, but it is a little harder trying to watch this with friends who refuse to watch a movie with subtitles. But to be honest, the 80s/90s series had some pretty weak English voice talent, and hearing the origional actors is kind of nice. Also there's a bonus special feature at the end, after credits. It's about a 40 minute behind the scenes spot, that shows quite a bit of detail on making the film. This is a rare thing for 80s films in general, so it's kind of nice. Again, it's a little tough going with no English to stand on, but the behind the scenes visuals themselves are nice! I still with whatever studio holds the American distribution rights would hurry up and for this thing over already! Or better yt, give it to Classic Media so they can do what they did with the Godzilla movies they release!

I own all the Godzilla DVD's and consider myself obsessed a tad but Megalon,1985 and Biollante I had on imported DVD's. I was so happy to hear about Biollante being released on DVD it's been way too long. This year has been great for Godzilla fans we finally got Megalon on DVD and it was a very nice transfer it had great video quality and now we will be getting Biollante. Now in terms of quality of the movie it's one of the better Godzilla movies very unique and of course any Big G fan will get it right away. This also means all that's left is Godzilla 1985 to be officially released on DVD lets hope we get that real soon that would be great news for all Godzilla fans.

Update: while I'm very happy to get an official release on DVD the quality is not the best it's probably the worst transfer of any Godzilla on DVD and the sound is horrible it's 1.0 mono for The English Dub. Again I am obsessed and love Godzilla and would recommend it for the collection but the bootlegs are almost better quality.

The answer to the title question is Biollante (plant). A dr. creates a giant plant using Godzilla's cells. Like every other Godzilla movie, Godzilla battles Biollante. Biollante battles Godzilla in his Rose form. Godzilla beats Biollante and Biollante seems to die (yeah right). Godzilla does some damage and about thirty minutes later Godzilla battles Biollante final form. They have a pretty good fight, but in the end, Biollante forces Godzilla to retreat from battle. Biollante then turns into cells and they go up into space. It is a direct sequel from Godzilla 1985. I like this movie alot. I wish it were out on DVD.
