Hit! (1973)

Hit!A very solid revenge movie with good acting by Billy Dee Williams, and scene stealer Richard Pryor, it moves slow in the first half of the film, the second half is hard and unrelenting, the box art is deceptive and inaccurate, this movie is like an extended version of the series Mission Impossible with unedited violence. The direction of the film was great, it is a classy movie with hard edges. don't sleep on this one.

I saw this film for the first time a few years ago after seeing that a friend of mine on IMDB rated it a perfect 10/10, and I have to say, it completely blew me away. The box art and poster are misleading because this isn't a slam-bang action movie. It's first and foremost a slow-building character study, as well as a nuanced revenge drama, and all of the characters are interesting. I won't give away much of the plot, because that would spoil the fun, but I'll just say that things do pick up at the end and get chaotic. The finale is simply one of the best sequences I've seen executed in any film, not just in the action genre. The performances are all terrific. Billy Dee Williams does some of his absolute best acting work here, and Richard Pryor gave what I consider to be an award-worthy performance. If you loved his work in "Blue Collar" and "Some Kind of Hero", you'll certainly love him here. The rest of the cast is filled with mostly unknowns, yet they do top-notch work. The film takes a very subtle approach in developing its characters as well, keeping most of their backstory in the shadows for the most part, which is more than satisfying. To sum it all up, I'll just say that in order to truly be impressed by this film as much as I was, it's probably a good idea to set your expectations low so you don't come away with an underwhelming feeling. I knew very little about this film before watching it and was simply knocked out by the end. It's quite an experience and I'm surprised it's as obscure as it is, but thanks to this wonderful Blu-ray release, I can relive the film in all its glory, and in HD to boot. Highly recommended.
